The World at Large

The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes “Awww!"

“What are you going to do with your life?” In one way or another it seemed that people had been asking her this forever; teachers, her parents, friends at three in the morning, but the question had never seemed this pressing and still she was no nearer an answer… “Live each day as if it’s your last’, that was the conventional advice, but really, who had the energy for that? What if it rained or you felt a bit glandy? It just wasn’t practical. Better by far to be good and courageous and bold and to make difference. Not change the world exactly, but the bit around you. Cherish your friends, stay true to your principles, live passionately and fully and well. Experience new things. Love and be loved, if you ever get the chance.

Adventures during the March break

It’s been ages since I blogged on this almost defunct blog. Since I have all the time in my hands, I shall attempt to give this another go, and begin by blogging about psyched I am about having this week off in March!

March marks the Southeast Asian Film Festival(http://www.singaporeartmuseum.sg/seaff). I caught the opening film Fable of the Fish on Friday evening which was unique but little underwhelming. Sailed along the strip of water in between Sands and Fullerton Bay Hotel yesterday afternoon with some of the old sailors. While it appears to and did not have much wind on a balmy Saturday afternoon, those who sailed in the early afternoon claimed they had decent gusts. Nevertheless a very different experience, with duck and hippo tour boats chugging by, surrounded by the oh-so-familiar Raffles place. Plus the positive externality of music from the esplanade, and the Sands’ watershow to accompany us on the leisure sail. Would be lovely to do these on weekday evenings.

This was followed by Korean BBQ at Katong 112 with the VJ clique. Nolboo Hangari Galbi is a lazy man’s Korean BBQ with all their grilled meats served barbequed to perfection. Ideal so you won’t reek of BBQ at Teo Heng subsequently, where we were all reduced to a bunch of teenyboppers singing out hearts to bubblegum. Gotta love M2M, BSB, A1 etc. Thank you for a great time Charm, Chris, Von, Nikki, Sue, Chloe, Crystal, Nicole, Jas, Leon, Lynn and Ruth!

Caught up with the sailors at Valentino tonight. Gotta be my favourite restaurant for traditional Italian fare. Service was attentive, and food was top-notch as usual. Pictures to come when I am not so lazy.

Realized this is my first post in 2012. The year has been treating me quite well so far outside work. Chinese New Year went by in a blur, and plenty of exhibitions/plays/concerts going on that have been occupying me outside work. Art Stage was fantastic, and so was Wicked, Laneway and Rachael Yamagata. As Singapore gradually establishes itself as the next Asian Arts mecca, I’m definitely looking forward the slew of events lined up. Think Andy Warhol will be very cool (http://www.cntraveller.in/content/andy-warhol-show-singapore). Have also finished my oil painting classes officially (an epic fail for me I think haha, but cathartic so to speak). Gradually playing tennis more respectably from weekly coaching. And volunteering weekly (unless I am overseas) at RDA as a sidewalker (engage the child/avoid angering the horse), and monthly for Meals on Wheels. 

Looking forward to watching the Lady tomorrow, Ting Heng with 5 gang, DEATH CAB ON WEDNESDAY, and then Philippines awaits! Can hardly wait :D

A change is gonna come. 

Had an awesome night at KPO and Sam’s on Fri, and cookout at HW’s on Sat. Reunion dinner tonight. Xinyee’s back and meeting the buncha DB folks on Mon night. 5gang dinner on Tuesday night and then it’s CNY!! Just learnt Rachael Yamagata is coming, and I am also psyched to watch Closer and Lion King. Contemplating whether I should go see MGMT. After missing Art Stage and Laneway, I vow never to miss out again! I am naturally in a very cheery mood. 

Is it better to know that something bad is going to happen, or have bad news tap you on the shoulder when you least expect. It seems almost natural to assume that an unexpected tragedy would by far be more devastating. A piece of news that threw you off-guard, and suddenly your world comes crashing down.  On the other hand, the concept of bracing yourself for the worst, with a permanent dark cloud looming eludes me really. Firstly, this speaks of a misfortune going to occur, even if it hasn’t happened. And more perversely, it implies an acceptance and detachment on your part when it does happen. That we saw this coming and have to act rationally, and not be too shell-shocked or emotional about it.  I don’t have to believe in the worst until it happens. And when it does, I don’t have to pretend to be stoic about it. I will sprawl myself on the ground and cry till I feel the full brokenness of my heart.
